Academic Editing for University Students, Post-docs and Researchers
Here is a sample of the kinds of academic editing projects Jenny did:
Jenny served as one of the editors approved to assist students, staff, and faculty with technical and academic editing projects at Royal Roads University (RRU) in Colwood, near Victoria, on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.
1. Biomass Energy in Rural Northern BC Communities: Background, application, viability and context of biomass energy with rural case studies.
Project Description
Provide editing services on a final research paper prepared by a student in the Bachelor Program in Environmental Practice offered by Royal Roads University. The student contacted me well in advance, so that I understood the context and requirements prior to receiving the draft, and could set aside time in my schedule to do the work. Nevertheless, the turnaround time for editing was short (a few days) due to the time it took for the student to complete the case study research, analyze the results and write up the paper. The final document was 67 pages (nearly 22,000 words in 54 pages of text, plus references).
Process
- Correspond with the student to establish goals and expectations and provide coaching on research paper preparation.
- Read through the initial draft to pinpoint any big structural and format issues, as well as any gaps, errors or inconsistencies in the logic of the conclusions based on the research objectives and the results. Identify a list of trends in grammatical, technical, and stylistic errors.
- Conduct a more detailed technical edit of the next draft, highlighting where any errors remain and identifying the type of error, double-checking APA style guide formatting, and reviewing citation and reference consistency and completeness.
Results
The paper was handed in on time. The grade for the research paper was A+.
Testimonial
“Hiring Jenny Feick to assist in editing my Major Research paper was a great decision, it helped me shape my work into an interesting and technically sound paper. She worked with me closely during the final stages of writing, and I learned a significant amount about how to improve my own work. I credit Jenny’s coaching with helping me turn a daunting review and revision task into a manageable exercise and put the necessary polish on the paper to earn an A+. She brought a fresh set of eyes and applied exacting standards and rigorous proofreading skills within the guidelines for professional editors set out by Royal Roads University. She was extremely quick and was willing to set her schedule to my timeline requirements. I highly recommend her skills as a technical editor to anyone.”

2. Socio-Economic Impact of Genetically Modified Crop/Food on Global Agribusiness: From Developed and Developing Country Perspective
Project Description
Provide editing services on a final Global Management Project paper prepared by an ESL student in the Masters Program in the School of Business at Royal Roads University. The turnaround time for editing was very short (a couple of days), as the student’s final deadline was within a week. The student faced budget limitations and could only pay for 10-11 hours of editing time. Most of this had to be spent on recommending grammatical improvements to ensure greater clarity. The document reviewed was 73 pages (15,212 words).
Process
- Correspond and meet face to face with the student to establish goals, expectations, and trust.
- Review feedback provided by the student’s supervisor and another committee member. These documents indicated academic issues that needed attention in each section of the paper and advised the student to engage an academic editor to go through the whole paper before re-submitting it.
- Review final draft and provide comments. Pinpoint structural and formatting issues, as well as confusing, unclear or inconsistent wording, and run-on sentences. Identify a list of trends in grammatical, technical, and stylistic errors. Highlight errors and identify the type of error for the first half of the document (up to . The draft document contained many repeated errors that related to issues posed by the English language, e.g. colloquial expressions and exceptions to grammatical rules, subject/verb and subject/object agreement, verb tense issues, spelling errors, run-on sentences and sentence fragments, etc.
- Establish an installment payment plan for the student so he could pay for work completed over several months
Results
The paper was handed in on time and helped the student achieve his Masters of Global Management degree.

3. Socio-Cultural disputes in Corporate Merger and Acquisition: ArcelorMittal
Project Description
Provide editing services on a final Global Management Project paper prepared by an ESL student in the Masters Program in the School of Business at Royal Roads University. The student’s original final deadline had passed and she had been given an extension along with a recommendation to engage an academic editor. The turnaround time for editing was not rushed; I had several days. However, the student faced significant budget limitations and could only pay for seven hours of editing. This only allowed time for me to:
- do a detailed edit of the long executive summary and lengthy Introduction, identifying issues in format, clarity, consistency, grammar, spelling, etc., and then,
- provide written feedback on major error trends in the rest of the document, along with links to information on specific grammar rules & APA Chicago Style format.
The majority of the feedback provided dealt with identifying areas where grammatical improvements had to be made to ensure the information presented could be understood. The document reviewed was 77 pages (14,890 words).
Process
- Correspond with the student to establish project parameters and budget.
- Review feedback provided by the student’s supervisor, indicating what in each section of the paper needed to be changed, including which sections were well over the stipulated word count.
- Review the final draft. Provide detailed comments on the front part of the document, highlighting all errors and identifying the type of error. For the rest of the paper, provide a list of trends in grammatical, technical, and stylistic errors. The draft document contained numerous repeated errors related to issues posed by the English language, e.g. colloquial expressions and exceptions to grammatical rules, subject/verb and subject/object agreement, verb tense issues, spelling errors, run-on sentences and sentence fragments, etc.
Results
The student met her revised deadline and this helped her achieve her Masters of Global Management degree.
