Yoga in the Park (June 1 & 8)

Savour this spring and exercise safely outdoors as the COVID-19 pandemic continues by enjoying a mindful flow yoga class in the fresh air of beautiful Banfield Park. Rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit in this moderately challenging and playful outdoor yoga practice.  Each week we will explore a different natural element theme.

Jenny doing Tree Pose (Vrksasana) in Banfield Park in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Besides improving one’s sense of balance, this joyful pose strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and the muscles along the spine. Tree Pose also stretches the groins and muscles of the inner thighs, chest and shoulders. It is reputed to relieve conditions such as sciatica and flat feet.

Register with the Vic West Community Centre to take both classes for $30.00 ($15.00/class). Be sure to secure your spot by registering in advance as this class fills up. The centre now has a convenient online registration system – see https://www.victoriawest.ca/community-centre/program-registration/ and https://www.cogran.io/index.html?victoriawest#/events . You can also complete your registration by phone by calling (250)590-8922. Unlike other years, because of COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, the class size is limited to ten people.

Be sure to dress in layers so you can put on or take off clothes to suit the temperature. If the weather is unsuitable for an indoor class, the class will proceed indoors (as long as pandemic health orders allow for indoor classes at that time) and only the registrants will be able to attend.

Drop-ins: Contact the centre at (250) 590-8922 to register for an individual class, which you can do if there is room that day and you register and pay the drop-in fee of $18.00 prior to 1:00 pm on the day of the class.

PLEASE READ: COVID-19 Precautions for Yoga in the Park

Fortunately, the area where we practice Yoga in the Park (by the old Garry oak tree near the parking lot for the Vic West Community Centre) will allow us to keep the appropriate two-metre distance between individuals who are not in the same household or “social bubble”.

Please register and pay for the whole course in advance. You should register asap since the class size is limited to ten people. You can make the payment on the date of the first class.

You must bring your own yoga mat and all other yoga props that you need or like to use with you. Please wash your hands, face, and if possible, your feet, prior to the class.

Please check in at the Vic West Community Centre registration desk before class. The small public washrooms at the centre are open. However, because of the need to maintain social distance, do not leave your arrival and check in or your use of the centre’s washrooms until the last few minutes before class. Plan to arrive early or use washroom facilities elsewhere before the class. remember that you musty wear a mask when inside the Vic West Community Centre.

While the instructor will have some hand sanitizer available at the class, you may feel more comfortable bringing your own bottle of hand sanitizer if you can.

Only verbal cues and demonstrations of what to do will be given as hands-on guidance and adjustments cannot be done yet. While you are welcome to wear a mask if it makes you feel safer, you do not need to use one while you are outdoors and on your yoga mat. The instructor will not be wearing a mask. If the class needs to be held indoors due to weather, you must wear a mask from the time you arrive at the centre until you are on your mat and then again when you depart, as well as if you need to use the washroom.

If you feel unwell or have any symptoms of respiratory illness, please refrain from attending a Yoga in the Park class.
